100 Years of Airmail (INDIPEX 2011)

100 Years of Airmail  (Set of 4 stamps in block of four)

Airmail is mail that is transported by aircraft. The world's first airmail service took off from the right river bank of Yamuna at  Allahabad, crossing over to left bank and dropped  to  Naini Railway Station on February 18, 1911, in Humber Biplane.

The mail bag contains 6500 letters and postcards. French aviator Henry Pequet was the pilot.

 As a commemoration of the completion of 100 years of Airmail services India Post issued a set of 4 stamps, a miniature sheet and a first day cover. The denomination of each stamp is Rs.5/- and that of Miniature Sheet is Rs.20/-

Special Commemorative postage stamp printed on Kadhi

As a commemoration of World Philatelic exhibition INDIPEX – 2011 India Post issued a special commemorative postage stamp in the form of Miniature Sheet printed on Kadhi the image of Mahatma Gandhi. It is the first postage stamp printed on Kadhi.

Khadi is Indian handspun and hand-woven cloth. Khadi is not just a cloth but it act as the icon of India’s freedom struggle. The Khadi movement aimed at boycotting foreign goods and promoting Indian goods, thereby improving India's economy. Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the spinning of Kadhi by using ‘Charkha’ or spinning wheel for rural self-employment and self-reliance in 1920 instead of using cloths manufactured in the Britain.

India Post issued this special stamp in the form of Miniature sheet having denomination of Rs.100/- on 12th February 2011. One noted feature of this stamp is only printed 1,00,000 copies and issued in the form of presentation pack worth Rs.250/- ( But a few copies issued without presentation pack for Rs.100/-) . Another notable thing is that the first day cancellation issued only from the New Delhi Philatelic bureau.

V Venkatasubba Reddiar

He was born on 18th December 1909.  He was the pioneer in the freedom struggle to liberate Puducherry from French rule. As per the direction of Pt. Jawharlal Nehru 12 leaders including him formed a parallel government against French Government on 31st March 1954 which resulted to merge Puducherry with Indian Union on 13th October 1954. He was the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry. He passed away on 06th June 1982.

The 2011 Census of India marked as the beginning of a new era in the terms of change in the methodology of census taking and quick distribution of census results by using the modern technology options available.

The data collected at Census 2011 will provide a comprehensive picture of the social, economic, demographic characteristics and living conditions of the people in India at various levels. This data has a great utility for national planning as well as policy formulation on different social, economic and political aspects.

India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp and first day cover on 07th February 2011 to commemorate this event.

V Subbiah

V Subbiah
He was born on 7th February 1911. He was an Indian communist politician from Puducherry (formally Pondicherry) and was the secretary of the Communist Party of French India. He is regarded as the founder of the trade union movement in the union territory. In 1986 Government of India listed him one of the 97 original thinking freedom fighters all over India. He is regarded by the people of Puducherry as “Leader of People”. He died on 12th October 1993.
